Hollyweird does it again! Once again a christian (fictional) in a hollywood film has been portrayed as a psychotic serialkiller. I am far from perfect but I swear, if I buy into this steady stream of HW mind control over the recent years, I’m either misguided, ignorant or even an extremely violent killer. And I thought I was just a little bit of eveything .

Although I think the original was better, it’s still a gripping remake of a thriller.

Here is a transciption i made of the first verse of Corazon Partio – Alejandro Sanz (MTV unplugged version) PDF file. It’s a beautifull nylonstring acoustic guitar part, wich is in nice dynamic contrast with the intro of the song. You start with a full sound (vocals, piano, guitar, bass, drums)

The transcribed part is of an alternate take (cd MTV Unplugged mix). There are a couple of differences arrangementwise: For example the intro of the live version (embedded youtube video), has additional nylonstring guitar in the intro and also acoustic piano in the first verse, whereas the cd unplugged version i have only has nylonstring guitar and electric piano and of course the lead vocals.

Differences aside, the basic chord progression of the 1st verse stays the same. Enjoy!

I never had the opportunity to study at the MI, the Musicians Institute. But the interviews i have seen with guitarist and teachers such as Scott Henderson and Carl Verheyen really makes you think. Man did i miss out;)

But fortunatly there are video’s of lessons and interviews such as this one. Enjoy!

What’s the first scale almost every guitarist learns? Yes, it is the minor pentatonic scale. Here’s a Scott Henderson lesson on how to expand your use of the scale, resulting in new interesing rythmic ideas and sounds.

I’ve added new tablature in the download section of this site.

Here is a transciption of the bassline of PDA ‘We just don’t care’ – John Legend in the key of B, the hit from the album ONCE AGAIN, October 2006.

|| Download the .rar file (gp6, mp3, and pdf file) here ||

Play
 Guitar Pro audio

The opening note is a fast slide down and pluck simultaneously and is meant as a cool effect a bassist could play to signify a start or transition from one musical part to another, not an actual identifiable note. In guitar pro i could not get the desired effect. If anyone knows how to make the desired sound in guitar pro, please comment.

Learning this bassline note for note is a good excersize in enriching your Funk/ RnB vocabulary, as well as practising your sightreading skills. Of course there are a lot of good transcriptions on bassplayers and the basslines that made them well known and respected, such as motown legend James Jamerson. But I also encourage you to learn to make your own transcriptions. This will greatly develop your ear and in combination with a good music theory book, gives you a better understanding of music in general.

In this bassline there is frequent use of the ghosted note technique. Ghost note: hand/ finger on string, but not putting pressure on the string so it touches the fretboard resulting in a percussive sound, rather than an actual identifiable note.

Youtube lesson by James Bowens on ghost notes can be found here.

There are a lot fills based on the major/minor pentatonic scale. For example bar 53 (bridge 1) and octavated 8th note parts (think disco, bar 24/25). Often times in this style of music the bassplayer will approach the 3′, natural 5′ and natural 6′ notes with a whole note slide/ or whole note hammer-on. In the 2nd bridge there is also some interesting chord work!

Note 1: There are a few times in the original bassline that an Eflat is played, which is the 4th fret on the low B string of a 5string bass. For 4 string bassplayers, tough luck, the loss of that single note ruins the whole experience;)

Note 2: To transcribe a whole bassline or song note for note is a time consuming task, so I reused some of the basslines (da segno sign) for the later verses and choruses.

Note 3: This score was made with Guitar Pro 6. I reccommend this software, because it is great for making your own transcriptions or arranging and composing.

If you use my transcriptions on your site or in your own lessons, please credit me.

This is the Aminor pentatonic scale 1st position on a 4 string ebass (normal tuning: E6, A5, D4, G3 strings).

Download here.

- It’s a good idea when playing in a faster tempo, to use in the right hand the index (i, indice) and middle finger (m, medio). Alternate between them.

- Check the finger label jpg for finger names for left and right hand

- In the left hand, all the 5th frets are played with the 1st finger. To train the hand in playing wide stretches with ease, leave the 1sth finger on the 5th fret, when playing the second note on that string. I.e. on the E6 string we have 5th and 8th fret. leave the 1st on 5 when playing the 8th with your 4th finger.

- Always practice with a metronome, when practising technique! And tap your foot;). A free online metronome: http://www.metronomeonline.com/

Visit the download section for more downloads (rar: audio, pdf, gp6 files).
Get to work!;)

Left and right hand finger labeling:

Edit (21-09-2011): Penta stems from the Greek word(: πεντε (pentè) meaning 5. The penatonic scale has 5 different notes A – C – D – E – G and back to A, taken from the Aminor scale or Aeolian scale (A – B – C – D – E – F – G – A) .

You start with A, move one and a half steps up to C (minor third). From C to D which is a whole step. Then another whole step to E, then the final step which again is a minor third interval from E to G. So in short the interval structure for Aminor pentatonic is 1,5 – 1 – 1 – 1,5.

Interesting is that the C Major pentatonic scale consist of the same five notes. But the interval structure is 1 – 1- 1,5 – 1 – 1,5 (C – D – E – G – A and back to C.

The blues scale in the key of A is basically Aminor pentatonic with on added note (also refeered to as the blue note), the note D# (or Eb if play down;) also called to augmented fourth or tritone.

Hi!
Here’s a short but fun to play etude I wrote for alternate picking and stringskipping. A lot of guitarists, myself included, can crank up the speed when playing simply from one string to an adjacent string. But it gets more challenging to do this when you…skip…a string. This little study is to help you practice alternate picking and stringskipping in a musical way, instead of repeating some boring scale!
“This one time practising..i fell asleep mid scale…;-)” I know what i’m talking about…|-)

- guitar pro 6 bestand (.gpx extensie)
- pdf
- oefen mp3

Remember: A good technique facilitates you to make a better interpretation of a piece. Some musicians, especially in the pop/ alternative scene are against playing with to high a technique, because it removes the ‘feeling’ of a piece, song or solo. Don’t be fooled my friend;). A good technique is like money, it’s amoral, meaning you can do good things or bad things with it. It is up to you how you use that technique. Go and practise!

Hope you like it and it is helpfull to you. If you have questions, feel free to ask using the contactform.

God Bless u!
